If you live in Austin than you can see Capital Studios rapidly reaching into the skyline. A large chunk of the concrete and steel work has been completed and soon enough the wood framing will begin. At the top of the podium we get a lovely view of the Capital to the northwest
There is a great article in the latest Austin Home that covers the upcoming Revival Square. We have been developing Schematic Design concepts for the project which will be defined as a unique and immersive shopping experience in the Hill Country. The centerpiece of this design is a retrofitted 108 year old church that has been moved from Middletown, Ohio to its new home in Austin, TX. Check out the article online.
Recently, Dick Clark + Associates put together a competition entry for a open call on design submissions for the existing Seaholm Intake Center on Town Lake. Our design solution focused on the multiple routes of transportation within the context of the building, and how to best design the building and its surrounding grounds to accentuate these forms of movement. Joggers, bikers, kayackers and daytrippers could move freely in a complex interplay between these separate groups.
Originally built in 1958, this house backs up to the Bright Leaf Nature Preserve. While perfectly situated to overlook uninterrupted treetops, the home's layout was internally focused. Beyond opening up the interior and adding floor-to-ceiling glazing, a new kitchen replaced the closed-in patio, and a back deck was added along the entire length of the house. In addition to new finishes throughout, the exterior was updated with Ipe, paint grip metal, and a private courtyard. The owners now enjoy an open plan, outdoor living space, and a home updated to today's Austin lifestyle.
A new home has finished construction in the diverse and historic Tarrytown neighborhood. Possum Trot, at 2,500 square feet, is a modest urban home designed specifically for the needs of a young Austin couple.

The clients for this project are active Austinites who enjoy the outdoors and are self-described foodies. Being close to the hustle of the city and the appeal of the natural amenities that are available keep the couple near downtown Austin. As DCA began design on the home, it was decided that this house would serve as a place to “grow up” from backyard grilling on lawn chairs to hosting more formal dinners.

The clients imagined their future house would include a formal entry, kitchen for entertaining friends and family, pool and spa, yard for the dogs, home office, guest room and den, and master suite with private outdoor space. DCA was happy to develop a solution that would accomodate the client's needs through the economic use of 2,500 square feet.

“Inside The Design Studio” will host revered talents in several design disciplines for an intimate and—at times irreverent—interview by founder Lytle Pressley. The format will be cocktails and conversation including an overview of their portfolio, audience questions and answers, and opportunities to mingle.

The elegant, 7,000 square foot space on West 6th street hosts high design and high value contemporary furnishings and rotating exhibitions from mid-career artists such as Roi James and Gina Brezini. Each second Thursday, “Inside The Design Studio” will examine the genesis of design, the impulse behind design, and the inspiration of today’s luminaries of architecture, landscape design, furniture/product design, fine art, interior design, and graphic design.

Masonry is a material with endless possibilities and therefore endless possibilities of expression. In Vernacular architecture, it captures the qualities, craftsmanship and regional characteristics. It’s very nature is that it is heavy and therefore does not travel well and because of this, it defines the architecture of a region by the bricks and stone on hand. Lueders and Dhanis Texas are great examples of this. It is also a material that is most often laid by hand with pieces that are ergonomically possible. It is therefore, one material that can capture the characteristics and qualities of the masons who laid it. Louis Hayn and his crew of Lookinggood Masonry were able to express these qualities at Oasis Texas that are only achievable with care and effort and team collaboration. Oasis Texas is a restaurant, retail and office destination on the located on Lake Travis. Oasis Texas garnered a Golden Trowel award from the Central Texas Masonry Contractor’s Association for the masonry.

The origins of each masonry type have a different story that explains how it became part of the project. One wall became known as “the Marfa stone” simply because the origin of the idea came from an indigenous building seen in Marfa Texas. It was such an odd and beautiful pattern that it just needed to be included in Oasis Texas.

After staying at Sweetwaters Preserve, where they were surrounded by beautiful scenery and unique animals (see pictures of rhino herd and hippo above and below), Dick and Matt spent some time at the Mount Kenya Animal Reserve. All the animals there were abandoned or mistreated by previous owners or severely wounded by poachers, and have been taken to the Reserve to be rescued and cared for. It is sort of like a zoo, but most of the animals roam free and very few are actually in cages! The pictures of the guys with the monkeys and turtle are from the Reserve.
Justin Townes Earle puts a refreshing spin on the Americana music scene. His sound, while familiar to an American's ear, is born from an urban experience that sets him apart from many of his contemporaries. His personal take on life, history and musical influence combine well in his latest album "Harlem River Blues." The Loll 4-Slat Adirondack has more comfort than you would expect from an outdoor chair, and even more so when you factor in that you will never have to work on it. The thick recycled plastic feels solid and at more than 50 pounds this chair will not blow around. Unlike most Adirondacks, they have hidden nearly every fastener for the cleanest lines. This chair is available in seven environmentally friendly colors. Link: Here

Flavor Paper
Redefining the accent wall, this vibrant line of wall coverings can bring an element of the unexpected to any space. The daring mixes of color, pattern, and shine can give personality to an otherwise generic space, or allow you to tone down your furnishings but still have an interesting interior. We especially like to use them for some visual punch in small spaces where room for other features, like art walls and accent furniture, is limited. Below are two examples of our use of Flavor Paper. http://www.flavorleague.com/
